Group Classes for under 16s
After Christmas we will be starting group singing classes for under 16s led by our newest teacher Laura-Jane Boardman who simply has a gift for working with youngsters!
These classes are open to ANYONE who loves to sing- there's no audition involved, the classes are purely for fun. The cost will work out at just £6 per class and the class sizes will be limited to ensure that every child gets plenty of attention!
Classes will mainly cover pop music but also some musical theatre and a few other genres thrown in for good measure.
These will take place on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. Places are limited so please contact us now to register your child for a place in January!

Spencer Welch SLS event goes down a storm!
Master SLS teacher Spencer Welch visited the studios in June to conduct teacher training classes, private lessons and public Master classes in SLS. The studio was full of singing teachers from all over the UK coming to learn as much as they could from the Master teacher. SLS teachers are required to do ongoing training and learning to further themselves on a yearly basis. Some of the teachers attending the events have been an SLS teacher for almost 10 years but still have lots to learn- that's what's great about the organization- each teacher is held accountable for their knowledge and teaching every year.
Spencer also did some classes for students- showing them how they could get more from their voices in songs. We've run these classes before and always get a great response from those attending- I'm sure we'll do more in the future so watch out for those!
All in all it was a very successful event- and we even managed to find the time to take Spencer over to Liverpool so he could see Penny Lane!
X Factor update- 4 yes's to HBSS Students
HBSS students Max, Leverne and Lauren had auditions in front of the new X Factor judges- Louis Walsh, Gary Barlow, Kelly Rowland and Tulisa- I'm happy to report that all of them were put through to Boot Camp! They have a hard week of auditions ahead of them soon with some stiff competition- we're keeping our fingers crossed for them!
Summer Show 2011
Students at HBSS took part in our annual Summer show at the Harlequin Theatre, Northwich in July. There were also performances from our Adult Pop Choir and Kids GLEE club. Everyone who took part did a great job and pulled together to put on a night of varied musical performances from the world of pop, musical theatre, jazz and opera. Great job guys!

WELL DONE SOPHIE

Maltese singer and student at HBSS Sophie got down to the final 24 in Malta's selection process for the Eurovision Song Contest 2011. She took part in a live TV show where the final act was selected to represent Malta at this year's Eurovision Song Contest. Sophie previously represented Malta in the junior Eurovision contest in 2006 where Heather went along to personally coach her for her performance. She didn't win the final this year- but watch out for future appearances!
BUSKING for CANCER RESEARCH

Members of the HBSS Adult Choir and Kids GLEE club took to the streets of Northwich on Saturday 26th March to entertain the public in aid of Cancer Research. They sang for over 2 hours and managed to draw quite a crowd who were all happy to donate to the cause. They all did a great job of both singing and chasing people for money!
Big thanks to everyone who took part and to everyone who came down to support us. We raised a total of £336.57 for Cancer Research which is fantastic.
HEATHER TAKES SLS TO ISRAEL

Heather travelled out to Israel in November to teach some of Tel Aviv's fantastic singers. Workshops were put on and paid for by the British Israeli Arts Council making them free to the public- and what a success that was- they were jam packed every night! Heather got to work with a range of singers from all backgrounds and musical genres and had such great fun doing so!
She also got to work with a Catholic Teen choir up in the North of Israel who were all so grateful for her being there- it was very humbling.
Here's what some of the teens very kindly wrote in our comments book:
"Dear Lovely Heather- shall I say that you are my inspiration! I never thought that I'm going to get to those high notes but you made it easy"
"Thank you for everything you have done today- I hope you enjoyed us like we enjoyed having you here"
Heather hopes to return to Tel Aviv at some point- we had such a positive response there to Speech Level Singing and what it can do for people's voices.
Thanks to you all for making her feel so welcome!

A FEW WELL DONES
To all who took part in the Open Mic Competition- particularly Emma Wells and Gina Harrison who went through to the Regional Final which took place in December.
To Paige Phillips who brought out a Christmas Charity single "What was I supposed to do" which can be downloaded on iTunes and has been played on Cheshire FM with all proceeds going to St Lukes Hospice.
To Diane Bettley who came 8th overall in the Park Resorts Talent competition- from around 1600 entries!
To 'Angels in White' who have just secured another 4 dates supporting Jools Holland on his national tour. You can see them in Newcastle, Bradford and Sheffield this December.
Well done to all of you!
RECORDING STUDIOS OPEN
We have opened a recording studio at HBSS!!
We have brought on board a fantastic recording engineer- Dave Healey to produce and edit your vocals. Dave has many years experience in recording and has worked with a variety of singers and groups from all backgrounds. We are set up to record demos, 'experience days' as well as Birthday parties, Hen dos or any other celebration. Please also ask about our corporate team bonding days! Have a look at our Recording Studio page for more information!
OUR NEWEST TEACHER!
In October, we welcomed on board a new teacher to the studios- Helen Monks. Helen is a Level 2 SLS teacher with a wealth of experience as a singer, teacher, writer and performer. Her student Olivia Archbold recently got through to the live finals of Britain's Got Talent.
Helen will be teaching at the studios on Thursday and Friday evenings and was practically fully booked within a week of me taking her on! Please contact us for her current availability.

Open Mic Success!
Congratulations to HBSS students Gemma, Paige and Emma who all made it through the first round of auditions for the Open Mic Competition in Liverpool. The second round requires a live performance in front of a huge audience in Liverpool on the 7th November- so good luck for that one!! If they are successful on this day they will go on to compete in a regional final in Manchester (Where Heather Baker will be appearing as one of the guest Judges) and then onto the national final at the O2 in London
Singing Exams
Watch this space for information about entering for the Rock School Singing exams. We will soon be putting together a monthly class for anyone who wishes to put themselves forward for a singing exam. These classes will cover all of the aspects that the exam will test (other than the performance of songs which you can work on with your teacher during your private lessons.) They include tests in rhythm, phrasing and dynamics, general musicianship and aural awareness. Since we will be entering Rock School exams you would be required to sing pop music. Please let us know if this is something you would be interested in doing
Summer School Pop videos!
Well done to all the kids who took part in our Summer holidays' Pop Video workshops! We had a great time and the kids created some fantastic ideas for their videos. After recording their vocals they set about filming the footage to put together for their music videos. That footage has been edited together to create a fantastic finished product- keep an eye out for those videos which will soon be uploaded to our facebook and youtube accounts!

Summer Show Success!
Students at HBSS alongside our Adult Choir and GLEE club took to the stage at the Harlequin Theatre, Northwich last Saturday for our big Summer Show- and what a show it was!
Our GLEE club performed an array of songs from pop and musical theatre- the most commented on was their performance of 'Omigod' from 'Legally Blonde the Musical.' We saw solo performances including numbers from Musicals like 'Jesus Christ Superstar', 'Sunset Boulevard' and 'Wicked' as well as pop numbers from artists like Elton John, Adele, Sarah Mclaughlin and even an operatic number- Pie Jesu. Our Adult choir stole the show with their Medley of songs from Sister Act- fully dressed as nuns!! The audience thoroughly enjoyed it and can't wait for the next one- roll on Christmas!!

Summer Pop Video course!
If you're aged 10 to 18 and are looking for something to do over the Summer Holidays- book yourself a place at our Summer Pop school (No previous singing experience is required.)
Over 3 days you will rehearse a Pop song chosen by you and one of our teachers in a small group. You will then record your song using recording equipment at the studios. This 3 day course will run from Tuesday 3rd August to Thursday 5th August 10am-3pm each day. There are only 15 places on the course so don't miss out- book now to avoid disappointment! The price is just £75 for the 3 days and also includes a copy of your finished music video which will be sent to you once the editing process is complete.
SLS Masterclass with Spencer Welch- a big hit!
What a great week it was having Master SLS teacher Spencer Welch visit us at HBSS. The picture here is of all the people who attended the Masterclass we ran in Bradford on Saturday. And what a class it was! Here's what some of the attendees said about it all:
"Loved the whole day- Spencer is DA MAN!!" (Anais Mutumba)
"What a great time, I learned so much and met some great people, thanks!" (Zena Taylor)
"This was a great weekend!!" (Anna Middleton)
"Fabulous Class- Really enjoyable!" (Helen Monks)
We also had fun watching Spencer teach private lessons all week at our studios in Northwich- what an inspiration! We had singing teachers from all over the UK, France, Germany and Ireland visiting for a chance to work with the Master.
Look out for information on similar events taking place in the Autumn of this year and Spring of 2011.
Connected- Britain's Got Talent!
You may have spotted mini Boy Band 'Connected' on this year's 'Britain's Got Talent'. A couple of these young singers have taken lessons with HBSS teacher Heather Baker and HBSS has an on-going connection with their performance group Jigsaw who encourage young performers to take part in Singing competitions through-out the UK.
The group got through to the final of the show and unfortunately missed out on winning the show. They are currently on tour around the UK performing in arenas with the 'Britain's got Talent' show!

Entry into the club will be by audition or invitation only. Classes will involve learning popular songs from R'n'B, Pop, Musical theatre and Soul- in harmony and putting choreography to the songs. If you love to sing and are over 16 come join our weekly adult choir. We will be singing songs from pop, musical theatre, jazz, rock and anything else that takes our fancy. This is purely for FUN and is a great way to put what you've learned in your lessons to good use!! If you'd like more information or would like to put your name down please contact the studio. We will meet on Mondays 7.30pm-9pm.
Congratulations!
A big Congratulations to Helen Burke who has just been offered a place at Mountview for next Year. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Mountview- it is one of the UK's most successful theatre schools and turns out large numbers of TV and West End stars each year- most notably the likes of Amanda Holden, Connie Fisher and Denise Welch.
Mountview is a notoriously difficult school to get into and Helen had to undertake a rigorous audition process to secure her place- so well done Helen and we all wish you the best of luck there! |

Paige's Britain's got Talent Experience!
Paige Phillips recently went to audition for Britain's Got Talent. For those of you who are unfamiliar with how the audition process works- you have to audition several times before getting the chance to perform in front of the Great Simon Cowell and co! Paige was one of the few who got through these early rounds performing for Producers and made it to the stage to sing for the panel. The audience loved her and cheered her on and she didn't receive a single buzz! The judges told 12 year old Paige that she had a great voice but they'd like it to mature a little before they put her through- so she didn't make it this time- but who knows- in a year or two she may go far indeed! Well done Paige- we're all very proud of you!
Paige is pictured here with the host of Britain's Got More Talent on ITV2- Stephen Mulhern.

Maltese Star
followed by UK Press!

Sophie has been causing a stir with her new image
and her last release 'The Clapping Song.' So much so that journalists
from leading UK Papers and Magazines flew over to Malta to follow
Sophie as she released her newest single 'K.I.S.S' (keep it simple
stupid) in Malta- performing at 2 major events- The Coca Cola Malta
Music Festival and The Farsons Great Beer Festival. Sophie also
came over to the UK at the end of August to headline 'Rhythm Parties'
a huge Under 18s Music event in London. Sophie was featured in Bliss
magazine and The News of the World in October and her single K.I.S.S
has just been released in the UK and is available on iTunes.
HearFones Now on Sale!
Have
you ever wished you could hear your own voice better when you sing?
Then the HearFones are for you!
A headphone-shaped apparatus with two curved pieces
of plastic that extend in front of your face, angled toward your
mouth, the principle is that HearFones reflect your your own voice
directly to your ears, thus enabling you to hear your own voice
better. A really useful device for all singers whether working in
a group or solo.
If you are a singer who has a tendency to sing a little too loud
at times (like me!!) I would thoroughly recommend this product,
as it feeds back your voice, making you want to turn down your volume!
Selling at just £30.00 a pair.
Ask to try them at your next lesson- you'll be surprised at the
results!
Master teacher visits HBSS!
Master
Teacher Greg Enriquez from Las Vegas spent a week at HBSS conducting
private lessons, teacher training and public Masterclasses.
We had singers travelling from France, Denmark, Israel, Germany
and locally from London, Bolton, Warrington, Liverpool, Manchester
and more to work with this Master of singing tuition! If you missed
it- watch out for news of our next big Master teacher event which
will take place sometime in the spring of 2010.
Here's what some of the students had to say about Greg:
" I was amazed by Greg's ability to assess the problems so
quick and he never gives up until the singer fully understand what
it is he/she need to work on - and the improvement was huge on each
and every one!"
"I enjoyed hearing other people sing and hearing feed back
not just on myself but on the others too. The class was a great
confidence builder and I would definitely do it again."

MVS Showcase a big Hit!
Students at MVS Malta studying with Heather put on a major showcase
at the end of their last term. There was a huge variety of acts
from complete newcomers to music right the way to very well established
acts in Malta. Music varied from Rock to R’n’B to Jazz
and even Classical.

| Sir Harry Cowell- successful music producer,
A&R guy and owner of ‘Private & Confidential music’
attended the showcase with top-line writer Lou Mullen. Two of
the acts- Rebecca Debattista and David Mario Fenech - were chosen
by Sir Harry to come over to the UK and record singles which
will hopefully be released in the near future. |
|
Well done to everyone who took part and special
thanks to the MVS team for all the hard work they put into putting
on such a great show!
